Course book: Ibn al-‘Ayni’s Commentary on the Manar

About the book:

Ibn al-‘Ayni’s commentary on the Manar offers a brief yet comprehensive explanation of one of the most important texts in Hanafi legal theory. The commentator offers a concise exposition of all the important aspects of Hanafi usul, enough to allow the student to be able to grasp the foundations of the school and what distinguishes it from the other schools. Imam Ibn al-‘Ayni is very deliberate in his word choice, providing the student a firm foundation of usul-specific terminology and also helping one grow in one’s linguistic skills.

Course prerequisites:

The course is taught in Arabic, and the text is also in Arabic. As such, all registered students must have a basic level proficiency in Arabic and the ability to read Arabic texts.

Course outcomes:

Increased ability to study and understand classical books, especially in usul al-fiqh; a broad understanding of the usul of the Hanafi madhhab; an appreciation of the different approaches taken by Hanafi jurists and legal theoreticians vs Hanafi theologians

Course duration:

The course spans from a period of 7 months to 9 months. There will be one lesson per week, with each lesson lasting about two hours.

Course book: Al-Damanhuri’s commentary on al-Sullam al-Munawraq.

About the book:

Shaykh Ahmad Al-Damanhuri’s commentary on al-Sullam al-Munawraq offers a brief yet comprehensive explanation of one of the most important texts in the classical logic tradition. As a result of its precision and excellent commentary, this text has become one of the most widely-studied commentaries on the Sullam. The author explains various issues within logic without overwhelming the student with excessive detail. This is an ideal intermediate level bridge to more advanced study in the field.
